Don't Get Caught by the "Fall Fake-Out": Your Grey-Bruce Winter Storage Checklist for Boats, RVs, Trailers & Things That Hate the Cold

—
October 1st, 2026

If you've lived in Grey-Bruce for more than one October, you know the pattern. The leaves are gorgeous, the afternoons are mild, and you tell yourself the boat can stay on the trailer for another couple of weekends. The RV is still parked beside the house. There's no rush. Then it happens overnight. A hard freeze rolls in off Georgian Bay or Lake Huron, the forecast turns, and suddenly everyone in Owen Sound, Port Elgin, Southampton, and Sauble Beach is calling around for winter storage at the same time. This fall is setting up to be exactly that kind of season. The Weather Network's fall outlook calls for above-seasonal temperatures across much of Ontario, driven by El Niño, but it also warns that frost, snow, and hard freezes are still a normal part of the transition into winter. A warm October is not a promise that winter is far away. It's a reason people put off the decision until the best storage spots are gone. At Stow It Self Storage, we talk to boat, RV, and trailer owners every fall, and the ones who have the easiest winter are always the ones who decided early. And it's not only vehicles: the same freeze that hurts your boat can quietly ruin the electronics, furniture, and keepsakes sitting in an unheated garage or shed. Here's how to think it through, what to do before winter arrives, and how to pick the right spot in Grey-Bruce.

Why "Just Leave It at Home" Costs More Than It Looks

Parking a boat or RV in the driveway or beside the shed feels free. Over a Grey-Bruce winter, it rarely is. Freeze-thaw cycling. Our region doesn't just get cold, it swings back and forth across the freezing point. Water that gets into seals, hoses, and seams can freeze, expand, and cause cracks you won't find until spring. Moisture and mould. A vehicle sitting under a tarp or in a closed-up yard traps condensation. That means musty interiors, mildew on upholstery and canvas, and corrosion on metal fittings. Rodents. Mice look for warm, sheltered places in fall, and an RV or boat sitting untouched for months is an ideal one. Chewed wiring and nested insulation are expensive spring surprises. Theft and vandalism. Boats, trailers, and RVs are valuable and easy to spot from the road. A tarp and a hitch lock are not much of a deterrent. Neighbour and municipal rules. Some municipalities and neighbourhoods limit how long large vehicles or trailers can sit in driveways or on the street. Check your local bylaws before you assume the driveway is a safe option. The space you lose. A 25-foot trailer in the driveway means you're clearing snow around it all winter, and a boat in the garage usually means the car is outside. That's just moving the problem somewhere else.

Indoor Heated vs. Outdoor Fenced: Which Is Right for You?

There isn't one right answer. It depends on what you own and how much protection it needs. Indoor heated vehicle storage is the premium option, and it's the right call for higher-value boats, motorhomes, classic or collector vehicles, motorcycles, and anything with sensitive electronics, leather, or custom finishes. Your vehicle stays out of the snow, the wind, and the deepest cold, and you avoid the worst of the moisture and freeze-thaw swings. At Stow It, indoor heated boat and vehicle storage is available at our Owen Sound location. Outdoor fenced and camera-monitored parking is the practical, more affordable option for utility trailers, travel trailers, fifth wheels, and boats that are already winterized and covered. It gets you off your driveway and into a secure, gated lot, and it works for many owners. Outdoor boat and RV parking is available at our Port Elgin location, and Owen Sound has outdoor RV parking too. A good rule of thumb: the more your vehicle is worth, and the more damage moisture or cold can do to it, the more indoor storage pays for itself.

Your Winterization Checklist Before Storage

Every vehicle is different, so always follow your owner's manual or ask your dealer or marina. These are the basics that apply to most boats, RVs, and trailers. 1. Fuel. Add fuel stabilizer, then run the engine so it circulates through the system. Filling the tank helps limit condensation. 2. Fluids. Change the oil and filter where recommended, and check coolant and other fluids. Old oil holds contaminants that you don't want sitting in an engine all winter. 3. Water systems. This is the big one for Ontario. Drain and winterize the fresh water lines, water heater, and any onboard plumbing. Use non-toxic RV antifreeze where appropriate. Water left in the system is the number one cause of freeze damage. 4. Battery. Remove the battery, or connect a proper battery maintainer. Store it somewhere cool and dry, and keep it charged. 5. Tires and trailers. Inflate tires to the recommended pressure, and consider blocks or jack stands to take weight off the tires on long storage. 6. Clean and dry. Wash the exterior, and clean and fully dry the interior. Remove food, damp towels, and anything that attracts pests. Leave cupboards and compartments slightly open for airflow. 7. Block the pests. Seal gaps and openings where rodents can get in, and don't leave food, pet food, or bird seed anywhere inside. 8. Cover properly. Use a breathable cover, not a plastic tarp that traps moisture against the surface. 9. Paperwork. Check your insurance. Some policies change or reduce coverage during storage, and it's much better to find out now than in April. 10. Take photos. Photograph your vehicle before it goes into storage, so you have a clear record of its condition.

Not Everything That Needs Protection Has Wheels

Here's the part most people miss. While you're sorting out the boat, think about what else is sitting in your garage, shed, or trailer that won't survive a Grey-Bruce winter or a humid summer. Extreme swings in temperature and humidity cause wood to warp, leather and fabric to grow mildew, and electronics to fail. A simple test: if you wouldn't leave it in an unheated garage all year, it probably belongs in climate-controlled storage. Things that commonly benefit from a climate-controlled unit:
  • Electronics: TVs, computers, gaming systems, stereos, cameras, and marine electronics you've pulled off the boat
  • Wood, leather, and upholstered furniture, including antiques and anything with a veneer or fine finish
  • Musical instruments like guitars, pianos, and violins
  • Photos, documents, records, and paper keepsakes, including business files
  • Art, collectibles, and vinyl records
  • Boat and RV soft goods: cushions, canvas, bedding, and camping gear that shouldn't go musty over the winter
  • Business inventory and samples that need to stay in good shape
You don't need a huge space for this. A small climate-controlled unit is often plenty for these items, and it gives you peace of mind that they'll look and work the same in spring. Our climate-controlled units are heated, cooled, dehumidified, and air-purified, so temperature and humidity stay steady all year, and they're available at both our Owen Sound and Port Elgin locations. Tip: If you're storing a boat or RV with us, ask about adding a small climate-controlled unit for the sensitive gear that comes off it. It's one stop, one visit, and everything's protected.

What to Ask Any Storage Facility Before You Sign

Not every place is set up the same. Before you commit, ask:
  • Is the vehicle storage indoor, outdoor, or both, and is the indoor space heated?
  • Are the climate-controlled units really heated, cooled, and dehumidified?
  • Is the lot fully fenced, gated, and covered by security cameras?
  • What are the access hours? Can you get to your belongings when you need them?
  • Are there size limits for length, width, or height?
  • What do they require for insurance?
  • Can you reserve now for a later move-in date?

FAQ

When should I put my boat into winter storage in Ontario? Most Ontario boaters haul out and winterize in October, before hard freezes arrive. If you want indoor space, it's smart to reserve earlier in the fall. What should I store in a climate-controlled unit? Anything sensitive to temperature or humidity: electronics, wood and leather furniture, instruments, photos, documents, art, and fabrics. If you wouldn't keep it in an unheated garage year-round, it likely belongs in a climate-controlled unit. Do I need climate control for a short stay? For a few weeks of a move, you may not. For a full winter, or for valuable and sensitive items, it's worth it. Is heated indoor storage worth it for a boat or RV? For higher-value or sensitive vehicles, usually yes. It protects against freeze-thaw damage, moisture, and pests, and can help prevent costly spring repairs. How much does storage cost in Owen Sound and Port Elgin? It depends on the size and type of space. Contact either Stow It location for current rates.
